GREATEST CHALLENGE: Travel 8 hour flight plus 10 hour bus ride

 

WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL? Jumping off point to the Chilean Patagonia

 

MUST EAT:

  • Curanto - A large pile of fresh seafood, shell fish, fish, a sausage, and a potato

  • Milcao - fried potato pancake with chicharones (bacon) mixed in

  • Chupe de pescado - a fish casserole/thick soup

  • llanqiuhue sausage, longanisas the best I have ever had

 

MUST SEE:

  • Chiloe - large island to the south, unique small towns on the coast sparsely populated rolling hills.

  • Puerto Varas - a small town 20 min north of puerto montt on lake llanquihue looking at Volcano Osorno, and active volcano you can ski on

  •  

 

MUST DO:

  • Take a ship down south and watch the Andes Mountains crash into the sea

  • Drive through the Andes for a weekend in Bariloche, Argentina; a picture perfect ski town in the Andes, famous for their chocolate in a country famous for their steaks

  •  

 

Other Recommendations: Angelmo an open air market with dozens of small stall restaurants next to where the fishing boats come in

Futaleufu one of the best white water rafting places in the world
