NAME: Lee-Or

CITY: Rome

COUNTRY: Italy

YEAR OF TRIP: 2016

HOW LONG WERE YOU THERE? 4 days

BEST TIME TO GO: Not Midsummer

GREATEST CHALLENGE: Summer weather: stiflingly hot and dry

WHAT MAKES THIS PLACE SPECIAL?

  • Best cheap food

  • Longest, well-preserved history

  • Friendly vibe

MUST EAT:

  •  Roman-style pizza

  •  Gelato from small Gelaterias (especially lemon flavored)

  • Pistachio Cannoli on the shores of the Tiber in Trastevere

MUST SEE:

  •  Pantheon

  •  Forum/Colosseum

  • Da Vinci Museum (underrated especially if you have friends who are engineers)

MUST DO:

  •  Drink a glass of wine at a restaurant/bar with a 2000-year-old view

  •  Take a day trip to Pompeii about an hour away

  • Buy some Roman-style Pizza while waiting in (the endless) line to get into The Vatican

Other Recommendations: The best food in Rome is not on the main streets, it is on the side streets where the restaurants are still family owned and 7 euros gets you a full plate of pasta with complimentary bread. Take the time to leave the touristy areas and walk through residential parts, there is no better way to get to know a city.
